Monument Engraving in Toronto and the GTA

Monument engraving is the work of adding new lettering to a memorial that is already in the cemetery. Haven offers monument engraving in Toronto and across the Greater Toronto Area. We do this work right at the gravesite, so the stone never has to leave its place. Families call us most often for final date engraving, for adding a second name to a companion stone, or for adding an inscription later.

Most jobs are done as on-site cemetery engraving. The memorial stays in place, and we handle the cemetery approval paperwork for you.

What Is On-Site Monument Engraving?

On-site monument engraving means adding new lettering to an existing memorial right at the cemetery. The memorial stays on its base. Nothing has to be moved. Some people call this on-site cemetery engraving. Others call it cemetery lettering. They all mean the same thing.

Haven does this work on granite uprights, granite flat markers, and bronze markers (we provide name and date tabs for bronze markers) that sit on a granite base.

This is not the same as buying a new memorial. If you need a brand new piece, please see our upright headstones, flat markers, or bronze markers. On-site engraving is only for memorials that are already in the cemetery and need an update.

Our On-Site Cemetery Engraving Services

Haven offers five kinds of on-site cemetery engraving. They are listed below.

Final Date Engraving (Date of Death)

Final date engraving is also called date of death engraving. It is the service families ask for most often. Many companion memorials are made early. Both names and birth dates are already on the stone. When the second spouse passes, only the final date has to be added.

We look at the existing date format first. We check if it uses the full month and year, or just numbers. We match the new date to the same style, size, and depth on the granite memorial. The two dates should look like one inscription, not two.

Adding a Name to an Existing Memorial

Some memorials are made for more than one person. Often only one name is engraved at the time of installation. If there is space on the existing stone and the cemetery allows it, Haven can add a name to a headstone or flat marker on-site.

Before we book the work, we check three things. There must be enough clean space on the stone. The cemetery must approve the addition. The new name must line up with the existing layout. We share a layout proof with you before we cut anything.

Adding an Inscription

Families often want to add an inscription to a headstone after the original installation. This could be a short tribute, a religious phrase, a family title, or a date of marriage. Common short additions include “Beloved Husband,” “Loving Mother,” “Forever in Our Hearts,” and “Rest in Peace.”

If you have not chosen the wording yet, our guide to headstone wording can help. Once the wording is final, we plan where the new text will sit. We make sure it does not crowd the existing letters.

Foreign Language Engraving

Haven offers foreign language engraving in many languages. These include Chinese, Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Russian, Ukrainian, and Hebrew. The memorial material and the cemetery rules have to allow the work.

The family has to give us the final wording in writing. Please check the spelling and meaning before you sign off. This matters most for languages with accents and for scripts that read from right to left, like Arabic and Hebrew.

Cemetery Lettering on Granite and Bronze Markers

We do cemetery lettering in Toronto on granite uprights and granite flat markers. For bronze markers that sit on granite bases we provide name and date tabs. Each material needs a different method. Granite is sandblasted or hand cut. Bronze plates can be replaced. We pick the method that matches the existing memorial.

How On-Site Monument Engraving Works

The on-site engraving process has five steps. The steps are the same whether you need a final date, a new name, or a longer inscription.

1. Send Photos and Cemetery Details

Most jobs start with a few photos sent by email or text. Helpful information includes:

  • The name of the cemetery (for example, Mount Pleasant, Pine Hills, Elgin Mills, Holy Cross, or Beechwood).
  • The section, lot, or grave number, if you have it.
  • One full photo of the memorial from the front.
  • One close photo of the existing lettering.
  • The exact wording, name, or date you want added.
  • Any cemetery documents you already have.

2. Layout Review and Font Matching

Next, we go on site and measure the existing lettering. We look at letter height, letter style, spacing, depth, and finish. Then we make a layout proof that shows where the new text will go on the stone. Matching the font and the depth is the most important part of the job. The new lettering should look like it was always meant to be there.

3. Cemetery Approval

Most GTA cemeteries need to approve new engraving in writing before any work starts. Rules can change from one cemetery to the next. Some cemeteries care about letter size. Others care about language or placement. Haven handles all the cemetery paperwork for you. You do not have to deal with the by-laws yourself.

4. On-Site Engraving Day

Once the cemetery approves the work, our engraver goes to the gravesite. We bring portable tools, a stencil cut from the approved layout, and protection for the turf and stonework. Most final date jobs are done in one visit. Larger inscriptions can take longer. Weather and cemetery access can also change the timing.

5. Final Review and Photos

When the work is done, we clean the stone and take photos of the finished engraving. We send the photos to the family for sign off. If something needs a small fix within the agreed scope, we go back to the site.

Matching Existing Lettering, Font, and Finish

The biggest difference between a respectful update and an obvious one is how well the new lettering matches the original. Before we book the work, our team checks six things on the existing inscription:

  • Letter height and width, in inches or millimetres.
  • Font style. This could be Roman, Modern Roman, Old English, Script, or a custom face.
  • Spacing between letters and between lines.
  • Engraving depth. This could be a shallow surface engraving or a deep V cut.
  • Finish. This could be frosted, polished, painted in white or black, or unpainted.
  • Overall layout balance with the existing inscription.

This review is part of every quote. There is no separate fee for it.

Cemetery Approval and By-Law Considerations

Most GTA cemeteries need to approve on-site engraving in writing before the work can start. The three biggest operators are Catholic Cemeteries and Funeral Services (CCFS), Mount Pleasant Group, and Arbor Memorial. Each one has its own by-laws. The by-laws cover added lettering, foundation rules, letter size limits, and which languages and styles are allowed.

For a side by side look at cemetery rules across the major GTA operators, see our GTA cemetery by-laws guide.

Haven works with the cemetery office for you. We confirm what your specific cemetery allows before we send a quote. We send in the approval request. We pick up the signed permit before we book the on-site visit.

Typical timeline: cemetery approval takes 2 to 4 weeks at most GTA offices. Once approval comes through, most final date jobs are done in one visit. Total turnaround is usually 4 to 8 weeks from the day you send photos. Weather can change this.

We send a written quote with all fees listed before any work starts.

Why Families Choose Haven for Cemetery Lettering

  • Cemetery paperwork done for you. We send the approval request and work directly with the cemetery office.
  • Local team, local service. Our showroom is in Markham. We do on-site engraving across the GTA.
  • Cultural and language support. We engrave in many South Asian, East Asian, European, and Middle Eastern scripts when the stone and cemetery allow it.
  • Clear updates from start to finish. Memorial work can be hard for families. We send updates and a layout proof at every step, from the first photo to the final review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you engrave a headstone that is already installed in the cemetery?

Yes. In most cases, on-site cemetery engraving is done at the gravesite. The memorial does not have to be moved. Whether we can do on-site work depends on cemetery rules, the stone material, the weather, and the type of lettering you need.

How much does final date engraving cost in Toronto?

The price depends on the travel distance, and the existing lettering style. A single final date is the most affordable update we offer. Send us photos and we will send a written quote. There is no obligation.

How do you match the existing font on the headstone?

Before we quote, our team go on site to measure the letter height, the style, the spacing, the depth, and the finish on the existing inscription. We then make a stencil that copies the same look on the granite memorial. We send a layout proof for your approval before we cut anything.

How long does on-site monument engraving take?

Cemetery approval usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Once it is approved, most final date jobs are done in a single visit. Bigger inscriptions or foreign language work can take longer. Weather can also change the schedule.

Do all cemeteries allow on-site engraving?

Most GTA cemeteries allow on-site lettering. Each operator has its own by-laws though. We check what your cemetery allows before we quote. We also handle the approval paperwork for you.

Do you offer foreign language engraving?

Yes. Haven engraves in Chinese, Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Hebrew, and more, when the memorial and cemetery rules allow it. The family must send us the final wording in writing.

Can you add a name to an existing companion memorial?

Yes, when there is enough space on the existing stone and the cemetery approves the addition. We send a layout proof that shows where the new name will sit before we book any work.

What information do you need to give a quote?

A full photo of the memorial, a close up photo of the existing lettering, the cemetery name, the section or lot number if you have it, and the exact wording, name, or date you want engraved.

How long does engraving last on a headstone?

Engraving on a granite memorial is permanent. The cuts are made into the stone itself. Painted finishes (white or black) may fade after many years of sun and weather, and they can be repainted. Bronze lettering can also be cleaned or repainted over time. The shape and depth of the letters does not change.

Will the new engraving look different from the old one over time?

The new lettering will look slightly fresher than the original at first, because the original has been weathered by the sun, rain, and snow. Within one or two seasons, the new cuts settle in and the two engravings look the same. We match the cut depth and finish so the difference is hard to see, even at the start.
