For many actually moving ahead with pre-planning can be more difficult to act on and a subject few like to consider. Pre-planning is making funeral arrangements in advance. It allows consumers to compare prices and services, allows time to make wisely and well-informed purchasing decisions. This avoids making quickly and often under great emotional distress choices when confronted by the death of the loved one. You are likely to feel uncomfortable comparing prices or negotiating over the details and cost of a funeral, pre-need or at need. Compounding this discomfort is the fact that some people “overspend” on a funeral or burial because they think of it as a reflection of their feelings for the deceased.
Funerals rank among the most expensive purchases many consumers will ever make. A traditional funeral, including a casket and vault, costs about $6,000, although “extras” like flowers, obituary notices, acknowledgment cards or limousines can add thousands of dollars to the bottom line. Many funerals run well over $10,000. When one begins to understand the emotional and financial pressure of a funeral, it becomes clear that planning in advance is a considerate and responsible action. It can protect loved ones with a larger number of options and considerations, one that can be determined to best suit your needs.

Funeral FAQs
First get the itemized list of prices and the casket from the funeral home. Check pricing at several funeral homes because shopping around will give you a more understanding of the choices and price difference in your area. Once you have chosen the funeral home that you want, then tell the funeral home that you will be purchasing a casket from us. They cannot charge you for receiving the casket and they must accept our casket. If there are any charges on handling a casket bought elsewhere, you should leave right away. The funeral home is charging you the difference or trying to earn back the money that is lost from you not purchasing their casket. There are many funeral homes that will gladly take our caskets at no cost to you. These are the funeral homes that you should be dealing with.
Shopping around will save you money and let you have control of what you want and not be charged for more. You can save more than $3000 on your funeral cost when you decide to purchase from Haven Casket.
A pallbearer is usually a family member, friend, or loved one chosen to help carry the casket. Anyone who may find the role too physically or emotionally difficult can choose not to participate.
Most Canadians who have worked and paid into CPP will be eligible to receive this benefit. The specific requirements are identified as: The deceased must have worked in Canada and contributed to CPP for a minimum of 10 calendar years OR a third of the calendar years in their contributory period. According to Government of Canada.
In most cases, funeral expenses are not claimed as a personal tax deduction. Families should confirm with an accountant or tax professional if they have questions about a specific situation.
Cremation can be performed with or without clothing, typically depending on the timing and nature of the services. If a traditional funeral precedes the process, the deceased is generally cremated in the attire chosen for the ceremony; however, if cremation occurs immediately following death, they usually remain in the clothing worn at the time of passing.
In Canada, cremation typically cannot occur until 24 to 72 hours after death, as specific legal documentation must be secured. In many provinces, such as Ontario, this process includes a mandatory review and authorization by a coroner before the cremation can proceed, a requirement that can sometimes take several business days to finalize.

Casket FAQs
Today, many people use the words casket and coffin to mean the same thing, but they are traditionally different shapes. A casket usually has four sides and a more rectangular design, while a coffin is wider at the shoulders and narrower at the head and feet.
Pricing depends on the material, construction, finish, and style. In many cases, simpler designs cost less than more decorative or premium options.
Yes, families can buy a casket directly from a supplier instead of purchasing one through a funeral home. This can provide more choice and clearer pricing.
Either may be used, depending on personal preference, the type of service, and cemetery or funeral home requirements. Many families today choose a casket for burial services.
In many cases, yes, but the requirements can depend on the type of service, timing, transportation, and funeral home policies. It is always best to confirm the details with the provider handling the arrangements.
Traditional coffins often have a tapered six-sided shape that is narrower at the top and bottom. This older design is still associated with the word coffin, while caskets are more commonly rectangular.
Some casket interiors and viewing setups place more visual focus on the upper half of the body. This is usually part of presentation style and family preference.
Yes. Pallbearers can be men or women, depending on the wishes of the family and those taking part in the service.
Urn FAQs
Not always. Cremated remains are often returned in a temporary container, but many families choose a permanent urn for display, burial, or placement in a niche.
As a general rule of thumb, you need 1 cubic inch of urn capacity for every 1 pound of body weight (e.g., a 180 lb person requires a 180-200 cubic inch urn). Standard adult urns typically hold 200–250 cubic inches, which is good for most adults.
Yes. Families can purchase an urn directly from a supplier instead of buying through a funeral home.
The best urn material depends on how the urn will be used. Metal, wood, ceramic, marble, and biodegradable urns all suit different needs and preferences.
Yes. Many urns can be personalized with engraving, names, dates, or other memorial details depending on the style you choose.
Yes, many urns can be buried, but the right type depends on cemetery requirements and whether the urn is meant for burial, display, or niche placement.
Yes, many urns are designed for columbarium placement. It is important to check the size requirements of the niche before choosing the urn.
A keepsake urn is a smaller urn designed to hold a portion of cremated remains. Families sometimes choose keepsake urns when ashes are being shared among loved ones.
Monument FAQs
It can be. Memorial is a broader term that may refer to a headstone, monument, plaque, or other tribute created to remember a loved one.
People may also use the words gravestone, tombstone, monument, or marker, depending on the style and context.
Flat headstones are often called flat grave markers or flat markers. They sit level with the ground and have a simpler, lower-profile appearance.
A pillow headstone is a slanted marker that sits lower than an upright monument but higher than a flat marker. It offers a balance between visibility and a more compact design.
The price of a headstone in Canada depends on the size, color, granite type, finish, shape, and engraving details. Custom designs, photo portraits, and extra lettering can also affect cost. For a detailed price list, refer to our headstone price guide.
At Haven, we make it easy to find a memorial that fits your budget. You can lower the cost by picking a standard size, a common granite color, and a simple design. We recommend that you compare monument styles to find the best price for your family. Taking a look at our monument catalog is a great way to find a high quality tribute that is both affordable and meaningful.
Lettering costs vary based on the number of characters, style of engraving, layout, and whether extra artwork or design elements are included. Give us a call or email to get a quote today.
The cost depends on the type of photo option used, such as porcelain portraits or etched designs, along with the size and placement on the monument. Porcelain photo starts at $150, while laser etched photos start at $450.
The best choice depends on cemetery rules, budget, and personal preference. Flat markers are usually simpler and more affordable, while upright monuments offer more space for design and inscription. To understand the difference between the two, refer to our headstone vs flat marker guide.
Popular granite colors often include black, grey, indian red and other classic tones because they offer a timeless look and work well with engraved lettering and designs.
Families can create custom memorial ideas, but cemetery rules, material requirements, and installation standards usually need to be followed before a headstone can be placed.
The weight depends on the size, shape, and material. Granite monuments can be very heavy, which is why professional handling and installation are important.
This can depend on cemetery rules, space, and personal preference. Many families choose wording that is respectful, lasting, and appropriate for the style of memorial.
Writing a great epitaph means picking a short, meaningful message that truly captures who your loved one was. Start by thinking about their biggest passions or their best personality traits, whether they were known for their sense of humor, their kindness, or their role as a parent. Since space on a headstone is limited, many families choose a favorite quote, a simple life lesson, or a classic phrase like “Forever in our Hearts.” Before you decide on the final wording, it is helpful to view our monument designs to see how much room you have for text. Checking out our monument gallery can also give you inspiration for a timeless tribute that.
Companion headstones are a beautiful way to honor two people together, usually featuring both names and their important dates. These monuments often include a shared message or a special design, like interlocking rings or a favorite flower, to show the bond the couple shared. Many families also choose to add a ceramic or laser-etched photo of the couple to make the tribute even more personal. Our monument gallery offers many examples of how to balance photos and text to create a lasting memory for your family.
Placing rocks or pebbles on a headstone is a tradition rooted in respect and remembrance, most notably in Jewish culture, though it is now practiced by people of many faiths. Unlike flowers, which eventually wither and die, stones are permanent and symbolize the everlasting memory of the deceased. Leaving a stone serves as a physical sign that family or friends have visited the gravesite, showing that the person is still loved and has not been forgotten.
