Memorial Design Analysis

Glenn Gould’s memorial is a flat polished grey granite marker. The shape of the stone is meant to look like the open lid of a grand piano. This is one of the most striking modern memorial designs in any North American cemetery. The shape itself tells you he was a pianist. No long inscription is needed.

The face of the stone shows the opening notes of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. That work bookended Gould’s recording career. He recorded the Goldberg Variations in 1955 when he was 22. That recording made him famous around the world. He recorded it again in 1981. He died the next year. The notes carved into the stone match the opening melody as Bach wrote it.

The piano lid shape is set flush with the ground. Mount Pleasant Cemetery moved to flat markers as the standard format after the 1970s. Flat markers made the grass easier to mow. Gould’s marker uses that format in a creative way. The flat plane becomes the lid. The curved front edge matches the curve of a real grand piano lid.

The letters and music notes are cut deep into the stone and painted in dark colour. They stand out against the polished grey surface. The shape is quiet. Many visitors do not see the piano lid form at first. They notice it only when they walk around to the foot of the grave and look across the top of the stone.

Why Glenn Gould’s memorial is studied

Glenn Gould’s grave is a top example of modern memorial design. Most memorials use written inscriptions to tell you about the person. Gould’s marker tells the whole story through three design choices. The piano lid shape. The carved Goldberg Variations notes. The quiet grey granite that fits his thoughtful character. Designers often point to this grave as proof that a flat marker can still be deeply personal when the form is chosen on purpose.

Glenn Gould’s marker uses the shape of the stone to tell his story. You can do the same. Haven’s custom monument program can shape a marker, add carved artwork, or include a reference to a person’s instrument or work. Our specialists can build these ideas into a personal memorial for your family.
