Headstone Materials: How Each Stone Ages

Walk through an old Ontario cemetery and you can see how headstone materials age. Some old stones still read cleanly. Others have gone blank. Material is one reason for the difference.

This page is about how each material behaves over decades. Not shape, not colour, not price. Just what weather does to stone, and what that means when you choose one.

At a glance

  • Granite: mostly silicate minerals, which resist acid attack. Its pore volume is very low.
  • Marble and limestone: mostly calcite, and weak acid dissolves calcite. That’s what erases old lettering.
  • Sandstone varies. Most of it resists acid well, but it’s soft and porous, so frost and salt get at it.
  • Bronze develops a patina. Keeping a wax or lacquer coating on it slows corrosion.
  • Freeze thaw is a major stress in a Canadian winter. Water gets in, then expands as it freezes.

  • Every material weathers. Carving depth affects how long the lettering stays readable.
  • Most Ontario cemeteries now allow granite only. For many families that settles it before durability does.

Why Old Gravestones Weather So Differently

Rain is mildly acidic all by itself. The US Environmental Protection Agency puts normal rain at about pH 5.6. Carbon dioxide dissolves into it and forms weak carbonic acid.

Marble and limestone are made mostly of calcite. The US Geological Survey notes that calcite dissolves readily in weak acid. So rain keeps working at the surface. Across a century that adds up to lost letters.

Granite is a different animal. The USGS describes it as mostly silicate minerals such as feldspar and quartz, which resist acid attack. Some granite carries a little calcite, and every stone weathers eventually. Granite simply weathers far more slowly.

So the stones showing heavy wear are the softer, more porous kinds. The Park Service notes deterioration on those can show within the first years outdoors. Granite of the same age can still look sharp.

How Each Material Handles Time

Granite

Granite is the material we recommend for a monument in this climate. Durability is why. It’s dense, hard and close grained. The National Park Service calls it a durable marker material with low porosity. Deterioration can be imperceptible for many years. Engraving cut into granite stays crisp far longer than on softer stone.

Marble

Marble is beautiful and soft. That’s the whole story. It carves easily, which is why Victorian monuments used so much of it. It also gives ground to rain. Fine detail rounds off first, then the surface itself goes grainy.

Limestone

Limestone shares marble’s weakness. Both are mostly calcite, so weak acid works on both. Limestone is also more porous, so it takes on more water. Frost then goes to work from the inside. Lettering can go shallow long before the stone itself fails.

Sandstone

Sandstone is grains held together by a natural cement, and that cement varies a lot. The USGS says most sandstone is mainly silica, so it resists acid well. The ones that suffer are cemented with carbonate, which weak acid dissolves.

Sandstone’s weakness is frost and salt rather than acid. It’s softer and more porous than granite, so weathering shows early. Stones with a layered structure can also delaminate, which means separating along their bedding planes. The Park Service records both patterns.

Bronze

Bronze doesn’t wear away the way stone does. It develops a patina, a green or brown film. That patina is worth keeping. Conservation practice is to maintain a wax or lacquer coating, which preserves the patina and slows corrosion. Raised letters sit proud of the face, which keeps them easy to read. The mounting and the granite base under a plaque are worth checking too. Water can get behind a plaque and freeze.

Sugaring, and How Marble Loses Its Letters

Sugaring is the trade word for what weathered marble does. The surface breaks down into loose grains. Run a hand across it and it feels like coarse sugar.

Here’s the mechanism. Marble is a mass of calcite grains locked into each other. Weak acid works fastest at the edges and boundaries between those grains. The grains loosen, then wind and frost carry them off.

Lettering goes shallow before it goes missing. Once sugaring starts, you can’t reverse it. You can slow it down and you can clean around it. You can’t put the surface back.

This is also why hard scrubbing is risky on old marble. The US Department of Veterans Affairs says even gentle cleaning isn’t recommended on stones showing severe surface erosion or cracks. Scrubbing a sugaring stone removes stone.

Freeze Thaw, the Canadian Factor

Monument advice written for milder climates doesn’t transfer well here. In Ontario a stone crosses the freezing point over and over each winter.

The basic mechanism is simple. Water seeps into pores and hairline cracks. It expands as it freezes, and growing ice puts pressure on the pore walls. Then it thaws, and the water works its way deeper.

Pore structure is a big part of what decides the outcome. The Park Service puts limestone and sandstone porosity as high as 20 percent. Granite’s pore volume is very low. How wet the stone gets, how well the site drains, and whether it already has cracks all count too.

Salt makes it worse, and the two together are worse than either alone. The Park Service describes salt laden masonry in freeze thaw cycles as a severe combined effect. Road salt travels in groundwater and in splash from nearby paths.

Carving Depth and Lettering Method

Material sets the ceiling. Carving decides how much of it you actually keep.

We cut monument lettering by sandblasting or by hand. For sandblasting, a rubber mask is cut, then abrasive cuts the exposed letters into the stone. Depth is a real choice. A deeper cut holds its shadow longer and reads well as the surface ages.

Shallow surface work is the first thing to go on soft stone. On granite it’s a much smaller risk, because the surface around each letter holds up far better.

Laser etching sits right at the surface, and it lasts on granite for the same reason. Our granite colour guide covers which colours suit etched portraits.

Paint and gold leaf inside the letters are a finish, not the carving. Sun and weather fade them. Refreshing that paint is routine maintenance and doesn’t cut the stone.

Adding a final date is a different job. That one does cut the stone. On granite it’s sandblasted or hand cut, and on bronze we fit name and date tabs. In most cases we do it on site at the cemetery, so the memorial stays in place.

On marble, depth buys time. It doesn’t stop sugaring. The whole face is receding, so the letters get shallower from both sides at once.

Finish and Legibility

The same granite can be finished several ways, and the choice shows in how the lettering reads.

A polished face is very smooth, which gives strong contrast between the letter and the face. That contrast is why the lettering face is polished. Polishing isn’t a sealant, though. Sealing stone is a separate treatment.

Honed and rock pitch faces are rougher to the touch. That is a look you choose, not a grade of stone.

What Damages a Stone When You Clean It

Good intentions don’t protect a stone. The wrong product can do real harm quickly.

Vinegar and acid cleaners. These dissolve the calcite in marble and limestone. It’s the same reaction as acid rain, only much faster. Never put them on stone.

Bleach. Bleach is alkaline, so it works differently. It still does damage. It leaves salts behind in the stone, and those salts crystallise and keep working. Veterans Affairs guidance says never to use bleach or products containing sodium hypochlorite.

High pressure washing. Pressure strips the surface off softer stone. It also forces water deep inside. Veterans Affairs prohibits the public from power washing the headstones it supplies, because of the damage it can cause.

Before You Clean Anything

Get permission from whoever owns the ground first. Veterans Affairs asks for that before any cleaning starts. Cemeteries have their own rules, and some do the work themselves.

Then test. Test any cleaner on a small area first, and let the patch dry fully before you judge the result.

Follow the label on whatever you use. Wear gloves and eye protection, and watch for splashing during spray work. Wash your hands afterwards. Use the gentlest method that works, and rinse the stone properly.

Use soft natural or nylon brushes, never metal ones. Veterans Affairs says to clean only when it’s above 5 degrees Celsius.

D/2 Biological Solution. This is one of the cleaners made for stone. The National Park Service recommends it in its cleaning guidance. That document covers government issued marble headstones. It says it doesn’t give recommendations for granite, sandstone or limestone. The maker says it holds no acids, salts or bleach, sits at pH 9.2, and suits granite among other materials.

It doesn’t behave like a household cleaner. It carries on working after you’ve left. Allow two or more weeks for biological soiling to clear. Heavy growth can need a second application. The maker says it works best above freezing.

Growth isn’t only a cosmetic problem. Bacteria on stone produce acids that attack it, and fungi push into the pore system and carry bacteria deeper. Left alone, growth contributes to decay.

The Foundation Matters Too

When a monument leans, look at the foundation before you blame the stone.

The concrete under an upright monument has to sit deep enough to clear frost movement. If it doesn’t, frost can lift and drop the stone as the ground moves. The stone tilts. Then it settles wrong.

A shallow foundation is one cause. It isn’t the only one. Poor drainage, soil movement and tree roots all pull monuments out of line over time.

Granite won’t rescue a bad base. Ask what the foundation spec is before you compare two quotes.

What This Means When You’re Choosing

For a new monument in this climate, granite is the practical answer. Everything above points the same way.

There’s also a simpler reason. Most cemeteries in Ontario now allow granite only, so the choice is often made for you. Confirm it with yours before you shop.

  • Marble carves beautifully. It weathers faster than granite here, and most Ontario cemeteries no longer allow it.
  • Bronze works well on a granite base. See bronze markers and flat markers.
  • Colour comes from where the granite was quarried. It isn’t a durability rating.

Is It Safe to Clean a Headstone Yourself?

Get the cemetery’s permission first, then test any cleaner on a small patch. On sound granite, gentle cleaning with water and a soft brush is low risk. On old, eroded or cracked stone, leave it alone. Veterans Affairs advises against even gentle cleaning in that condition.
